Rubbish already reported by Mr O'Brien, was worse but as a health hazzard had been removed within 24hrs (by whom I have no idea, not wholly convinced it was Council)

I love Hilary Mantel books. I, like you, have realised what I read has an impact on how I sleep. How I feel, in general.

I try to make sure I read a factual book - like a popular science book - or a Bill Bryson book on nights when I want to sleep well.

Also, as I get older I find any alcohol at all disrupts my sleeping. And if I wake up at 3am then I am ready for an asylum by 7am! Every single touch of stress and depression inside me goes on a rampage.

Thanks for that Pauline, and thank Gerard for the advice. I think staying under the radar is a good idea, at least until able to deal with the attention sticking your head above the parapet brings.
I've tried to explain to Em that when someone has a new outfit, what they *want* to hear is "You look nice", and *not* "Primark's low pricing strategy inevitably means that someone in the developing world is being exploited".
I'm all for a bit of elastication!

Just read your wee blog, its such a worry and you want your kids to be your kids. Gerard (my S6 gangly geek) has some worldly advice about High School, all kids in S1 & 2 want to fit in and keep under the radar, its survival of the fittest. A little elasticating of principles may be required and a bit of tolerance also, into S3 and onwards kids feel more confident about being themselves and start to stamp their own mark on themselves as people. BTW if you see the hair and clothes he now wears and reminices about fitting in when he was younger he's talking from experience. I find it harder with Libby as girls are under pressure to grow up too quickly but so far I think I'm managing (1 topshop blouse amongst M&S school shirts defo did the trick in my house) Its hard being a parent but we do try our best!

I understand your emotions. We had a family trip to Florida a few years ago. On a visit to the beach Shirley and I fell asleep. It was at Clearwater and it was very humid and hot. The sea was filled with people and the beach was miles long with scarcely an inch of spare space. We woke up and could not see Stephen - just about 5 - 6 years old at the time. It took us 20 minutes to find him sitting watching a game a good distance along the beach. To this day I can still vividly remember the desperate panic and terror while I was frantically running around looking for him. It still makes me shudder.
