Splice
Adrian Brody has been in a whole lot of good films. Spice isn’t one of them. Neither Jan or I can remember how this got in the Lovefilm queue, but it did kind of work on a Saturday night of bad news.

Adventureland
I was young in 1987. I think that’s enough to make it a good movie. The soundtrack is of course supercool, way cooler than I was in 1987, in fact way cooler than I am now, but my favourite bit was Judas Priest playing while our hero is chased through the fairground.

Four Lions
Four Lions is a funny film. It is not as uncomfortable as I would have guessed. Three cheers for Chris Morris, Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong !

This Happy Breed
Jan and I enjoyed This Happy Breed this afternoon. Four bits of trivia gleaned from Wikipedia: Stanley Holloway is Sophie Dahl’s other grandfather Kay Walsh was married to David Lean and got a writing credit for Great Expectations for devising the ending. She also devised the opening of Oliver Twist Robert Newton invented the Long [...]

the Runaways
Jan is a long time Joan Jett fan. I couldn’t say I was and I didn’t know the work of the Runaways at all, but I picked this movie because, hey, I love rock’n’roll and I like that bit in the 70s just before punk. I enjoyed the movie and I liked the music, but [...]

Cleopatra
Viewed over two Saturdays because it doesn’t fit on one DVD, we all enjoyed this Roman camp fest. On the first disk Elizabeth Taylor is smuggled in a carpet to see Rex Harrison, they become lovers and see off the threat of Richard O’Sullivan. Cleopatra travels to Rome, arriving on a huge golden carnival float [...]

Cemetary Junction
I had high hopes for this film by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant who I love, but for me it was too crude and only good in parts. I liked the Reading Majestic and the gran (played by Valerie Barlow) and the joke about Elton John being better than classical music. I went to Reading [...]

Superman III vs. Iron Man II
On Saturday afternoon Lucy and I watched Superman III. Leave aside that the story doesn’t make a lick of sense, it was a lot of fun and inspired Lucy to draw this picture. Richard Lester directing Richard Pryor, Pamela Stephenson and a load of British actors — this just felt like the perfect comic book [...]

King Kong 1933
I like old films and I hoped the kids would like the 1933 version of King Kong. It is a truly great movie and the kids did enjoy it, but they were about a million times more excited by the trailer for the 2005 version that played at the end of the DVD. OK kids, [...]

My Summer of Love
is a cool British movie starring Natalie Press, Emily Blunt and Paddy Considine. So many obstacles to love in sunny Todmorden.
