Granta 115: The F Word

The F word in this case is feminism. I enjoyed Jeanette Winterson (writing about love and Gertrude Stein) and the story of Mona the hijras in Dehli (a transexual who could live with her family as a man and do the Haj).

I also enjoyed the very dark Sex Lives of African Girls by Taiye Selas, with its mounting dread as an innocent tne year old girl realises the dangerous situation she is in.

And A Train in Winter by Caroline Moorhead. You can never read too much about life in the death camps.

I was less keen on the divorce stories. Sorry Rachel Cusk. Aftermath by Rachel Cusk is written with a terrible sadness, but is your divorce a feminist issue ? I know — I’m just a bloke, but I don’t quite get it.
